Leanne's Marathon £3000 for the Lizard Lifeboat

Leanne Gilbert of Mullion succeeded in her efforts to run the London Marathon this year - - and we now know that she raised a marvellous £3000 for The Lizard Lifeboat with her initiative!  The money will go straight into the fund towards a new, faster Tamar-class lifeboat to replace The Lizard's trusty but ageing Tyne-class David Robinson.  Leanne presented the Lizard lifeboat branch President Dr Geoffrey Wood with a cheque for the money at the branch's annual meeting. Chairman Reginald Freeman led the thanks and applause for her "wonderful effort."  Talking about her day running round the London streets afterwards, Leanne said: "It was absolutely wonderful. The crowd was fantastic and the atmosphere even greater than I expected."  Would she like to do it again next year? "I'd love to," she said, and hopes to apply for a place in 2008.

Leanne Gilbert of Mullion is making a marathon effort to help the future of her local RNLI lifeboat, literally. And you can help her!

For three years Leanne, a pharmacy technician, has applied to take part in the famous London Marathon – and this year she has succeeded.

So on 22nd April, she will be in the throng running the 26 miles through London in aid of The Lizard Lifeboat.   “One or two friends have done it and I’ve wanted to do it for years and to help a good local cause,” she said. “Watching it on TV it looks a really good day with a lovely atmosphere and a good chance to raise some money for charity.”   To get fit for the epic run – her first-ever marathon – she is out three evenings a week, running 11 miles each time around her home village: “I’ve done horse-riding and swimming and walk a lot, too,” she said.   The Lizard lifeboat is in the queue for a new Tamar lifeboat to replace its trusty old Tyne class boat David Robinson, and fund-raising towards the £2 million new boat is well under way by local station members. Sponsorship forms for Leanne’s effort are being placed in local shops and other outlets in The Lizard and Mullion, or you can donate by sending cheques to Leanne, c/o The Lizard RNLI Lifeboat treasurer     12 Mitchell Close,  The Lizard TR12 7RR.
