Singing the lifeboat’s praises!
A member of
the famous The King's Singers, who are celebrating their fortieth
anniversary, has visited The Lizard lifeboat station to lend his support
to fundraising for the new Tamar class lifeboat that will eventually be
stationed there. Paul Phoenix from Cambridgeshire was on holiday in the
area over Easter and visited with his family to meet station officials
and volunteers. He and his singing colleagues performed a concert in
Tewkesbury Abbey last November for the RNLI, honouring the volunteer
members of the charity's Flood Rescue Team who were called to Tewkesbury
during the 2007 floods.
Tenor Paul Phoenix has been with the King's Singers for 10 years and is
a big supporter of the RNLI:
'My Dad's family are Manx and I remember many childhood holidays spent
in and around Port Erin and Port St Mary where there are RNLI lifeboats.
In fact I can still recall going to a naming ceremony of a Rother class
lifeboat, Osman Gabriel, in Port Erin. It was 1974 and I was 7 years
old. In those days you could go for a trip around the bay in the
lifeboat, it was a significant event for a little boy!
'Now I take my children to the coast where we enjoy our happiest times.
The sea has been a huge part of my life and I find great peace and
solitude in the remoteness of the coastline of the Outer Hebrides where
we regularly go on holiday. A love of the sea also means you aware of
its power, which in turns reminds you of the importance of a life saving
charity like the RNLI and its crew volunteers who will often launch to
an emergency in weather most of us would rather avoid.
'Our recent visit to The Lizard lifeboat station was a wonderful and
uplifting experience and reminded us all of the vital importance of the
charity to the many seafarers who round The Lizard on a daily basis. I
wholeheartedly support the work of the volunteer crew there and the
fundraising efforts to raise the £2.6 million needed for the Tamar
class all weather lifeboat that will eventually replace the existing
Tyne class lifeboat.'
